The Federal Government of Nigeria through its Minister of foreign affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar has slammed the unfair treatment of Victor Osimhen by Italian football club Napoli.
According to him, the Italian club went against the spirit of sportsmanship and brotherhood by mocking Osimhen who played a vital role in Napoli’s Seria A triumph last season.
The Nigerian forward was a victim of a bizarre video from Napoli’s media account on Tuesday, 26th of September, 2023 after failing to convert a penalty against Bologna in their last match. Thus, leading to a goalless encounter.
Napoli’s video centered on Osimhen appealing for a penalty with an edited pitch voice effect which was used as a means of mocking the Nigerian striker after his failed attempt to convert the penalty.
However, the Italian football club denied their intentions to offend or mock the Nigerian striker with the video. This was contrary to the expectations of football fans globally who expected the club to issue an apology to Osimhen.
Despite the official statement from Napoli, Yusuf Tuggar opined that an apology from Napoli to the Nigerian football star would have been better than their denial.
