FG To Include Families Of Fallen Heroes In CCT Scheme

The Federal Government has disclosed plans to include the families of fallen Nigerian soldiers and members of the Nigerian Legion among the many beneficiaries of its Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday by her Media aide, Mr. Rasheed Zubair.

Edu was speaking during her visit to the Ministry of Defence, Abuja.

She said the action was part of the desire of President Tinubu’s administration to aid the vulnerable ex-servicemen, widows, and dependents of the fallen heroes.

Edu, therefore, requested accurate data on the affected families of the fallen heroes to ensure their inclusion during the ongoing verification of the national social register.

She said that the president had directed the expansion of the national social register to accommodate these vulnerable groups, allowing them to also enjoy social intervention programmes.

She said, “This is in line with Mr. President’s agenda, and I am here to inform you that the program has been expanded to accommodate retirees of this ministry, especially deceased families.

The government intends to support their wives to start up small businesses that will help their children stay in school and provide basic healthcare.

“Additionally, Edu also announced the creation of the Government Enterprise Empowerment Programme (GEEP) aimed at aiding small-scale businesses in the country.

The Minister, therefore, appealed to the Ministry of Defence to provide adequate security cover for humanitarian workers while operating in the fields.

Earlier, the Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, commended the Humanitarian Ministry for its efforts to support the families of the fallen heroes.

Abubakar pledged to strengthen collaboration with the Humanitarian Ministry to alleviate the predicament of Nigerians.

“Including the retirees in the welfare scheme will go a long way to renew the hope of retired officers, and their families and motivate the working officers to secure the Nigeria territorial integrity,” Abubakar said.
