Tonali, Zaniolo Leave Italian Squad Amidst Illegal Betting Investigations

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali and Aston Villa’s Nucolo Zaniolo have left the Italian football National team squad following a police investigation into their involvement in illegal betting activities.

The departure of both players was confirmed by the Italian Football Federation via an official statement revealing that both players will not take part in the European Championship qualifier games against Malta and England.

However, the Federation didn’t disclose the full details of the investigation but stated that both players were free to leave the squad as the event might have a psychological effect on them ahead of the crucial EURO qualifier matches.

According to reports from the Italian News Agency, both players were informed about the issue while training in Coverciano, the Italian National team’s training center. The Turin Public Prosecutor’s office also interrogated both players as an investigative procedure for an illegal betting probe.

The statement from the Italian Football Federation issued on Thursday stated that the Federation was officially informed by the Turin Prosecutor’s Office on the Investigations of Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo on Thursday afternoon.

The Federation further revealed that both players were currently training with the National team at the Coverciano Federal Training Centre ahead of their European Championship qualifier clash. However, with the nature of events, the Federation felt that both players may not be in the right frame of mind ahead of the games against Malta and England.

In addition to that, the Italian Football Federation, after considering every factor, has decided to allow them to leave for their respective clubs for their protection.

Sandro Tonali left AC Milan to join English side Newcastle United in July while Zaniolo joined Aston Villa from Galatasaray on a season-long loan in August.

Italy is set to host Malta on Saturday, 14th of October, and then travel to Wembley for a crucial clash against England on Tuesday, 17th of October to secure qualification to next year’s European Championship.
