China Ready To Fund Abuja-Kano And Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Trains

It was a nice announcement, that the Chinese government has reaffirmed its persistent commitment to renew and finalize Nigeria’s ambitious Abuja-Kano and Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri railway projects.

This monumental promise was made by none other than the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping himself, in response to a request from Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, during a high-profile bilateral meeting in the vibrant heart of Beijing.

The resounding declaration titled ‘At 3rd Belt and Road Initiative Forum: China Commits to Refinancing, Completing Abuja-Kano, Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri Railways’ sends ripples of optimism through the international community. Since the inception of these game-changing projects, China’s financial commitment has been withheld, primarily due to financial constraints and other obligations. The deal originally involved China providing a huge 85 percent for the financing of the railway, with Nigeria is responsible for the remaining 15 percent—a promise Nigeria dutifully upheld through appropriations.

However, the tides have now shifted, as President Xi Jinping not only pledged to reawaken these key railway endeavors but also signaled an expanded investment in Nigeria’s power generation and digital economy. Amidst these momentous commitments, Xi emphasized the imperative to safeguard Chinese nationals working in Nigeria and vowed to strengthen the already robust Nigeria-China bilateral relationship.

China’s support extends further, as President Xi expressed his commitment to deepening practical cooperation with Nigeria, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Manifesto’ and his comprehensive eight-point economic agenda. The promise to boost Nigeria’s exports, particularly in commodities like peanuts, underscores China’s dedication to strengthening economic ties.

In the realm of security, China, as an enduring ally, has reaffirmed its resolve to combat terrorism and ensure peace in the Sahel region. The long-standing military training programs and Memorandums of Understanding joint exercises between the two nations remain unshakable.

In his resounding statement, President Xi reinforced the importance of Africa on the world stage and urged that Africa’s potential should not be underestimated. This significant commitment to fostering a more substantial and strategic relationship between China and Nigeria cements their collective determination to play a leading role in international diplomacy.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, carrying President Tinubu’s warm regards, voiced the critical importance of these railway projects to Nigeria. He underscored the commitment to a Nigeria-China partnership that thrives on mutual respect, devoid of political interference, and centred on global cooperation.

In this era-defining declaration, China’s resolute pledge not only rekindles hope for Nigeria’s transformative railway projects but also amplifies the unified, mutually beneficial partnership between two influential nations, poised to shape the course of international relations.
