Man Utd Miss Out On Women’s Champions League Spot After Suffering Defeat To PSG

Manchester United Women failed to secure a spot in the Women’s Champions League after suffering a 3-1 defeat to French side Paris Saint Germaine (PSG) in the second leg of the playoffs.

The defeat means that the Red Devils have fallen short of making it to their first-ever Women’s Champions League via an aggregate loss of 4-2 after playing out a one-all draw in the first leg of the playoffs against PSG.

PSG opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Mary Earps punched away Chawinga’s strike but was rebounded by Martens who curled it past the World Cup golden glove winner to give the French hosts the lead.

After several failed attempts in the first half, United got themselves level two minutes into the second half as Naalsund slotted the ball home after receiving a through ball from Geyse to draw them level.

The hosts re-established their lead almost immediately as Chawinga created the chance for Martens to score her brace from close range, causing more problems for the English side.

Manchester United kept searching for another equalizer but efforts from Hannah Blundell and Geyse were thwarted by the PSG goalie, Katarzyna Kiedrzynek to keep the French side ahead.

Due to the hunt for a leveler, the Red Devils left themselves exposed at the back and PSG capitalized on it and punished United by scoring the third goal three minutes before the hour mark. Baltimore beat Blundell for pace and chipped the ball beyond Mary Earps from a tight angle to put more daylight between both teams.

United however kept fighting back as Katie Zelem forced a save from Kiedrzynek with a well-struck free-kick, Leah Galton’s goal was chalked off for a foul on Kiedrzynek who required treatment after the collision. Toone also struck the post at stoppage time but United failed to go through.

The defeat for Manchester United also means that only the Women’s Super League Champions, Chelsea will be representing Britain in the Women’s Champions League this season.
