The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has recently benefited from a significant financial boost, as revealed by its Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole, who is also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). The university received a generous allocation of N954.7 million from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), earmarked for the year 2023 and allocated to support eleven specific areas.
Professor Egbewole made this announcement in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, during the combined 37th and 38th convocation ceremonies of the university.
In addition to this substantial grant, UNILORIN was also awarded N500 million by TETFund for the development of student hostel accommodation and another N200 million for zonal interventions. These funds have been strategically utilized for various projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing the university’s educational and research endeavors.

One noteworthy aspect of UNILORIN’s academic progress lies in its substantial contributions to patenting in Nigeria. Professor Egbewole proudly stated that the university produced four patents during the 2021/2022 academic session and currently holds a total of 36 patents. These patents, in various fields, have been registered with the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Office of Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NATOP) in Abuja.
The breakdown of these patents showcases the university’s diverse contributions to innovation and technology. They span across medical (five), agriculture (five), engineering (16), food (one), information technology (four), petrochemical (three), defense (one), and energy (one). The university is actively working on positioning these patents for commercialization, ensuring they make a meaningful impact beyond academic achievements.
During the convocation ceremony, Professor Egbewole encouraged the graduating students to embrace the challenges and opportunities that await them with adaptability, continuous learning, and a willingness to relearn and unlearn. He emphasized that UNILORIN remains committed to fostering a culture of excellence, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.
