Nigerian singer, rapper, and songwriter, Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, professionally known by his stage name Skales, narrated his ordeal with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In an interview with Pulse Nigeria on October 23, he explained vividly his encounter with the agency officials in his home. He narrated, “I went to perform at Felabration and I went back home. My daughter was awake and I was trying to make her sleep. She eventually slept off and I did too.
“Suddenly, I felt someone tapping me with a stick. When I opened my eyes I saw three or four guys with AK47s in my bedroom. They looked like bouncers and they had no EFCC badge or name tag on them.
“I asked what they wanted and they demanded my phone. I gave it to them and they snooped through it, going as far as searching some keywords and checking my transaction history. They went downstairs, searched through my guys’ phones, and claimed they found “something” on it. Two of my guys were taken into custody. Ever since, they have not been released nor charged in court. I was not called in for questioning too because they knew they made a mistake”.
Skales, via his Twitter, now X, account on October 10, 2023, called out the EFCC for home invasion and abuse of power.
According to his statement, they broke into his house without a warrant around 4 a.m. He asked them for their mission severally and they eventually said it was a “routine check”; claiming they were working based on a tip that he allegedly does fraud. After arresting his artist and one other guy at his residence during the incident, they left his home without checking anything else.
The singer also disclosed that his baby’s mother mistakenly dropped his 6-month-old daughter due to the shock of the break-in.
Furthermore, he noted that the operatives tampered with the CCTV before breaking in. He was able to get video evidence from his neighbours which he duly posted on the X space. He said one of the officials threatened his life after his outburst on social media.
Skales has spoken out that he feels very unsafe after the traumatizing experience but he will move on because he has nothing to hide.
