ASUU Shares Foodstuff, Relief Materials to IDPs in Katsina

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) carried out a donation of food supplies and relief materials to 320 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Katsina State yesterday, in a bid to support the vulnerable population in the region.

During the distribution event, ASUU’s President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, conveyed the union’s commitment to assisting the most vulnerable, particularly IDPs throughout the nation. Dr. Alkali Lawali, a national resource person representing the ASUU President, expressed that the donated items such as rice, beans, groundnut oil, and spaghetti aimed to alleviate the challenges faced by many IDPs. Similar contributions have been made in various parts of the country in recent weeks.

Osodeke, via Dr. Lawali, expressed concerns regarding the persistent security issues that hinder the return of many IDPs to their communities. The union had anticipated that under the leadership of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired military officer, security challenges and the IDP situation would have significantly improved.

ASUU views the IDP crisis as a poignant indicator of leadership challenges within the country and believes that the current Federal Government has a responsibility to address these pressing issues effectively.

The donation by ASUU underscores their ongoing dedication to supporting vulnerable communities and it aims to ease the difficulties faced by those affected by displacement. The union expressed concerns about the persisting security challenges, resonating with their vision for a more secure and stable environment for the displaced population to return to their homes. ASUU’s call for prompt action from the current government highlights their urgency in addressing these critical issues.

The ASUU President, conveyed indirectly, urged the government led by President Bola Tinubu to devise swift and effective measures to resolve the security situation. This, in turn, would enable the IDPs to return to their communities and resume their normal lives without further delay.
