Messi Lands Eighth Ballon d’Or Award, Three Clear Of Closest Rival

Argentine forward Lionel Messi claimed his eighth Ballon d’Or award, three more than closest rival Cristiano Ronaldo after leading Argentina to World glory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar.

Messi was presented with the Award in Paris by David Beckham, the former Manchester United midfielder and owner of Inter Miami which Messi currently plays for in Major League Soccer (MLS) in America.

Upon receiving the Award, the Argentine admitted that it could probably be his last Ballon d’Or win and he hoped to enjoy the feeling differently. Messi also revealed that winning the World Cup was amazing but he wasn’t used to receiving awards and being on stage. However, he adapted after claiming the award for the first time in 2009.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint Germaine player also expressed his pride in his football career and stated that his football career is gradually coming to an end with every passing moment.

Manchester City striker, Erling Haaland finished as first runner-up having scored 52 goals last season and helping his side win the English Premier League, The English FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League but his records and achievements were deemed insufficient to beat Messi to the prize.

However, the Norwegian didn’t leave empty-handed as he was given the Gerd Muller Trophy Award as the best striker of the year due to his superior goal tally compared to other players last season.

Kylian Mbappe finished as second runner-up after winning the Golden Boot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and winning the French League with PSG.

European Champions and English Champions, Manchester City was named Club of the Year for the second time in a row after winning the treble last season in a dominating fashion.

Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen made it to the top 8 in the Ballon d’Or ranking, the record-highest a Nigerian has made it to in the Award.

Barcelona and Spanish midfielder Bonmati won her first Women’s Ballon d’Or after inspiring Spain to a World Cup triumph and also won the league and women’s Champions League with Barcelona.
