Federal Government Greenlights N5.1 Billion for Tetfund Research Projects

The Federal Government has given its nod to the disbursement of N5,128,180,623 to support 185 research proposals as part of the National Research Fund grant cycle. The coordination of the NRF falls under the purview of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, conveyed the approval following the recommendation of the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee. The committee, after a thorough screening process, endorsed the funding of the research proposals.

TETFund disclosed that the extensive exercise commenced in March of the previous year, with the receipt of 4,287 Concept Notes from potential applicants. In a statement issued by its Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdulmumin Oniyangi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, TETFund shared the breakdown of the approval.

A sum of N3,784,635,923 has been allocated for the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group. Additionally, N759,875,400 is earmarked for Humanities and Social Science, while Cross Cutting receives N583,669,300.63. The individual grants range from N8 million to over N46 million.

The statement highlighted some of the approved research projects under the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group, including the Application of the Hydro-Biogeochemical Framework for Developing a National Rural Water Quality Assurance Plan, Development and Use of Doubled Haploid Maize Lines for Enhanced Maize Yield and Tolerance to Armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda), Development of an Intelligent Multichamber Evaporative Cooling Preservative System for Post-Harvest Storage of Selected Fruits in Nigeria, and Development of Electric Vehicle With Special Tracking Features, among others.
