NCC Directs Telcos To Resolve Debt Dispute

This is good news for Globacom subscribers, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has postponed the planned barring of Glo subscribers from calling MTN lines for another 21 days.

The commission postponed its planned barring of Glo subscribers from calling MTN lines for 21 days.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) disclosed this Thursday morning in a statement signed by Director, of Public Affairs, Reuben Mouka, as a follow-up to its Pre-Disconnection Notice issued on January 7, 2024.

In a statement that was released today, the NCC announced that both Glo and MTN have reached an agreement to resolve their long-standing interconnection debt dispute.

As a result, the phased disconnection has been put on hold for the next 21 days starting today, 17 January 2024.

The NCC emphasised that interconnect debts must be set by all operating companies, highlighting the importance of complying with regulatory obligations.

However, they acknowledge the potential impact on consumers and urge all mobile network operators to keep to the terms and conditions of their licenses.

Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Mouka, revealed that the NCC is actively working on creating a permanent solution to the interconnect debt issue in the telecom industry. They aim to enhance the quality of experience for consumers and reduce the need for using dual SIM cards.

Interconnect debt, which refers to the fee that telecom operators pay to each other for calls terminating on their networks, has been a point of disagreement between MTN and Glo. Thankfully, the NCC intervention brings hope for a resolution within the next 21 days.

Amidst this development, Glo has confirmed making outstanding payments, proving their commitment to resolving the matter.

Stay tuned for more information and updates on the next steps for Glo subscribers. The NCC will be releasing further details soon. Let’s hope for a harmonious resolution that benefits all telecom consumers in Nigeria!
