A Consultant Physician at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Prof. Fatai Fehintola, highlights the crucial role of maintaining healthy kidneys through adequate hydration, particularly in hot weather.
However, dehydration can result in fatigue, discomfort, and irritability. Fehintola advises drinking a cup of water (200-250 milliliters) every hour, at two-hour intervals, tailored to individual needs and environmental conditions.
The physician underscores the impact of hot weather on the body, causing significant water and salt loss through sweat. In such circumstances, the body’s cells may malfunction, and organs work harder to maintain water balance. Fehintola emphasizes that insufficient water intake can lead to concentrated urine, indicating the kidneys’ efforts to conserve water. To counteract this, he recommends replacing lost fluids and consuming water-rich fruits like watermelon and orange.
Another Consultant Physician at the University of Ibadan and the University College Hospital, Dr. Yemi Raji, discusses the broader health implications of excessive heat caused by global temperature rise and ozone layer depletion. He specifically addresses the heightened risk of heat stroke, particularly among the elderly. Raji, a nephrologist, warns that untreated heat stroke can lead to organ shutdown, including kidney failure, underscoring the importance of timely intervention.
Raji advocates preventive measures against heat stroke, such as staying indoors when possible and ensuring proper cooling systems. Hydration remains paramount, with a focus on reducing the risk of kidney failure. The physician also acknowledges the impact of hot, dusty weather on allergic individuals, particularly those with asthma. He recommends using face masks outdoors to protect against dust and viral infections.
Prof. Fehintola and Dr. Raji stress the critical role of adequate water intake in safeguarding kidney health, especially during hot weather conditions. The physicians’ recommendations encompass not only hydration strategies but also measures to mitigate the impact of hot weather, emphasizing the importance of staying informed and taking proactive steps to maintain well-being.
