Toney Scores On His Return As Brentford Edge Nottingham Forest In Five-Goal Thriller

Ivan Toney scored on his return from an eight-month ban from active football for illegal betting as Brentford ended their five-goal losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

The striker was also fined £50,000 and given a warning about his future conduct for breaching 232 FA betting rules. The Nottingham Forest game was Toney’s first competitive game for 260 days. However, it was the visitors who drew first blood in the third minute through Danilo’s half-volley strike from 20 yards to put the visitors ahead.

Brentford struggled to get a foothold in the game until they were awarded a free kick at the edge of the penalty area after Mikkel Damsgaard was fouled by Orel Mangala. A perfect position for Toney, having scored a free kick from a similar position against the same opponent last season. Toney curled his strike into the bottom corner beyond Turner’s reach to level things up for the hosts.

The home side took the lead two minutes before the hour-mark as Ben Mee connected with Mathias Jensen’s corner to find the back of the net on his landmark of 50 appearances for the club.

However, their lead could only last seven minutes as Chris Wood connected with a cross from Callum Hudson-Odoi to make things even. That was Wood’s fifth goal in four games for new Manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

With 20 minutes left in the game, Brentford restored their lead as Toney was once again involved in an attacking move by switching the ball to the right flank to find Mads Roerslev. Neal Maupay received a cross from Roerslev in the penalty area, beating Murillo and Andrew Omobamidele with his first touch and finding the bottom corner.

The result projects Brentford up to 14th place on the log, six points clear of the relegation zone. Forest on the other hand are down to 16th place and four points clear of Luton Town having played a game more.
