Police Launch Manhunt for Killers of Couple Found Dead in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for the perpetrators behind the tragic killing of a couple found dead in the trunk of a car along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on Wednesday.

According to the statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, an investigation is underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding this grim incident.

Earlier on the same day, passers-by discovered the lifeless bodies of a man and a woman in an abandoned vehicle along the expressway. The bodies displayed signs of violence, including gunshot wounds, and were found at a desolate spot along the Tempo Junction in the Umunya area. Alongside the bodies, several expended cartridges were discovered, further pointing to a violent crime.

The police suspect that the couple was murdered and then abandoned at the scene. The bodies have been retrieved and transported to the mortuary for a comprehensive autopsy. The vehicle in which the bodies were found, identified as a black Corolla with Lagos AAA 621 EU registration, has also been recovered by the police.

In a press statement, Tochukwu stated, Police personnel attached to the Oyi Division led by the DPO at about 7:30 am today 24/1/2024, have recovered two lifeless bodies abandoned in a car boot along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

The preliminary findings indicate that the victims, a man and a woman, bore marks of violence and gunshot injuries across their bodies. The disturbing discovery suggests a brutal murder, with the victims then left in the vehicle.

A video circulating on social media captures the moment passersby inspect the dark-coloured Toyota Corolla, its doors wide open, revealing the gruesome scene inside the trunk where the two bodies lie. The visible bloodstains beneath the car indicate a recent and brutal crime.

The State Police Command’s proactive response to the incident highlights their commitment to addressing the rising cases of violence. This incident follows a similar pattern of criminal activities in the region, raising concerns about the security situation. The PPRO confirmed the incident when contacted, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.

In a related incident last month, a man was reportedly shot in the leg during an attack that resulted in the tragic killing of two policemen in a suspected kidnapping attempt in Uga, Anambra State, on December 29, 2023. These incidents underscore the pressing need for heightened security measures and investigations to curb rising criminal activities in the region.
