NANS Joint Campus Council Protests Tuition Fee Hike at FUTA

The National Associations of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council in Ondo Axis, in a resounding expression of discontent, rallied on Saturday against the recent surge in tuition fees at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA).

Under the banner of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), students in Ondo Axis issued a statement titled “Exorbitant Tuition Fees: Open Letter To Federal University Of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Management,” denouncing the tuition increase as disheartening and unthinkable amidst the current economic hardship in the country.

Comrade Salami Rosheed, the Acting Chairman of NANS JCC Ondo Axis, emphasized the students’ opposition to the decision, stating, “As the apex students’ representative body in the state, we vehemently oppose this decision and we are prepared to take necessary actions to ensure that it is rectified in no distant time.”

He continued, “We speak on behalf of the students whose aspirations and academic journey are now being jeopardized by this unexpected burden and inhumane increment. We firmly believe that education is a fundamental right and not a privilege reserved for some selected few, hence, education must be accessible to all Nigerian students.”

The student body decried the recent tuition fee hike as contradicting the principles of accessibility and equality that education should embody. In a clear demand to the FUTA management, they called for an immediate reversal of the decision and urged transparent dialogue with student representatives.

“We are prepared to employ every lawful means at our disposal to ensure that the fundamental right to affordable education is not trampled upon,” warned NANS Joint Campus Council Ondo Axis. They urged the management to comprehend the far-reaching consequences of the decision and act in the best interest of the students and their pursuit of education.

This protest highlights the students’ determination to safeguard their right to accessible education, setting the stage for potential actions should the university fail to heed their call for a rollback in tuition fees.
